Serving up nonsense in the form of pick-me-up pills –
Article by John Dwyer (Sydney Morning Herald 25/01/2006, p15)
The Complementary Healthcare Council (CHC) is disappointed and concerned with the comments published in last Wednesday's Sydney Morning Herald, by Emeritus Professor John Dwyer regarding multivitamins and alternative therapies.
Dr. Tony Lewis, Execudive Director of the Complementary Healthcare Council of Australia (CHC) said, 'Professor Dwyer has attacked the vitamin industry, medical insurers, the 'alternative' healthcare industry, the Government and the TGA, industry practitioners and even pharmacists. His criticism is unwarranted and appears to be based on personal bias combined with lack of understanding of the current legislative provisions of the Therapeutic Goods Act and the Terapeutic Goods Advertising Code.
'Articles such as this cannot be taken seriously by anybody.'
Despite Professor Dwyer's prodigious qualifications and exalted title h

Choice attack on Glucosamine – 2 August 2005
Customers can Trust TGA Listed Products
Dear Retailers,
Three major stories have appeared in the media over the past 24 hours regarding Glucosamine. Choice magazine has made claims that there is less than the stated glucosamine in the products. The CHC, the suppliers of the products and the TGA strongly dispute the results.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) says at this stage it is not sure that the correct method has been used or that the Choice analysis is accurate and so is undertaking its own analysis - strong words from the regulator.
The CHC would like to assure our health food store members, who play a crucial role at the front line of natural health, that we are disputing the accuracy of the Choice article. A campaign to challenge these results is being put together, using

THE Therapeutic Goods Administration will investigate claims that many brands of the popular arthritis supplement, glucosamine, do not contain the quantity of glucosamine promoted on labels.
A study by the Australian Consumers' Association's Choice magazine this month found some brands contain up to 28 per cent less glucosamine than claimed on the label.
A TGA spokesperson said although there were no safety concerns associated with the findings, it would investigate the results. Choice has provided the study details, including testing techniques used, to the regulator.
'The TGA will undertake its own testing of glucosamine products using validated, analytical methods to determine if regulatory action is warranted,' a TGA spokesperson said. 'Medicines containing glucosamine are generally classified as low-risk. They are usually indicated for the relief of osteoarthritis, and may not claim that they are for the prevention, treatment or cure of this

Press Release: Herb Valley Glucosamine Products
Recent media reports by Choice Magazine and featured on Channel 9, have highlighed a number of issues concerning Glucosamine.
Therapeutic dose is 1,500mg per day
Scientific evidence shows that the therapeutic dose for Glucosamine is 1,500mg per day . You should ensure that the dosage and directions for use deliver this dosage level.
Herb Valley products deliver the correct dosage.
Product labels are misleading
A number of products show the value of the ingredient glucosamine sulphate-potassium chloride complex and not the equivalent value of the active ingredient glucosamine sulphate. This makes it difficult for people to ensure they are getting the right dosage and compare different products.
Herb Valley products are clearly labelled stating the ingredients and the equivalent values.
Products tested did not contain the stated ingredients
The Choice review contends that the products they tested did not contain the le
…Choice reviews Glucosamine products
Monday 1st August 2005 10:30am
Australian consumer group Choice recently reviewed Glucosamine products available in the marketplace.
Choice examined a number of issues.
Choice concluded that Glucosamine is an effective treatment for the symptoms of arthritis where the daily dosage exceed 1,500mg.
Choice tested a number of products and found that they did not contain the ingredients stated on the label (please note that Herb Valley was not tested which is unfortunate because we do).
Choice noted that some products did not deliver 1,5000mg per day if you followed the label directions.
Choice noted that some products were misleading in the way they promoted the active ingredients.
