National Heart Foundation urges increase in Omega 3 consumption
Monday 29th September 2008 10:30am
The Heart Foundation makes the following recommendation with respect to fish, fish oils, and Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) to improve the cardiovascular health of all Australians.
These recommendations are based on the evidence presented in the Heart Foundation's review of evidence Fish, fish oils, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and cardiovascular health, as well as healthy eating guidelines.
To view Heart Foundation guidelines and position statements, and a full reference list for this position statement, see www.heartfoundation.org.au/Professional_Information/Lifestyle_Risk/Nutrition.
Fish living in cold water are rich in n-3 PUFA—particularly docosahexaenoic acid (HDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA). Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is a plant-based n-3 PUFA that has many health benefits but does nto benefit cardiovascular health as well as marine n-3 PUFA.

Extract from Bank SA Business Focus August 2008. Armed with increasingly sophisticated information about the potential benefits of health supplements, a growing number of Australians are turning to vitamins and other herbal remedies. Australians spend more than $2 billion each year on these products, which are classed as complementary medicines. They range from vitamins and minerals to cold and flu products and food supplements such as nutritional oils. It's an industry sector that has gained in popularity with consumers whose health can be under siege through long working hours, stress, alcohol, poor diet and a range of other factors. One of the best-known brands in the market is Herb Valley, a South Australian company established in 1985 with a Therapeutic Goods Administration-licensed facility at Beverely. Owned by family business Essential Nutrients, Herb Valley's largest market is South Australia, which accounts for about 50 per cent of its sales. Its products are sold in heal |
Cranberries may fight ulcer-causing bacteria in humans

From NutraIngredients-USA By Stephen Daniells
Cranberry juice may enhance the power of antibiotics to clear the stomach of women of a bacteria known to cause ulcers and cancer, new research reports.
Results from the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 177 patients with Helicobacter pylori infection, published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, suggest that drinking cranberry juice during and after a weeklong antibiotic course enhances the eradication of the bacteria by about 10 per cent.
However, no beneficial effect was observed in men, reported the researchers from Tel Aviv University.
"Our present study with the cranberry perhaps opens a window to explore more gender-associated differences in the complex H. pylori-host interactions," wrote the authors.
H. pylori is the only bacteria that can survive in the acidic environment of the stomach and it is known to cause peptic ulcers and gastritis
…Cranberry products prevent UTIs - research finds
Wednesday 11th June 2008 9:17am
From Harvard Medical School
In what may be the biggest boost for cranberries since Thanksgiving, researchers with the highly respected Cochrane Collaboration — experts who identify and evaluate studies of health care interventions — say that scientific evidence supports daily consumption of cranberry products to reduce the likelihood of urinary tract infections (UTIs). The preventive effect is strongest in women with a history of recurrent UTIs — that is, three or more a year.
Cranberry juice has been used for years to treat and prevent UTIs, which are roughly 50 times more common in women than in men. UTIs can affect any part of the urinary tract but occur most often in the bladder (cystitis), producing symptoms of frequent, urgent, or painful urination, and sometimes abdominal pain or blood in the urine. Most UTIs are caused by Escherichia coli, or E. coli, which can travel from the anus to the urethra during activities such as using the toilet or having sexual
…Choice magazine says glucosamine supplements of benefit to osteoarthritis sufferers
Thursday 8th May 2008 10:30am
The Complementary Healthcare Council welcomes the following verdict for joint supplement usage in this month's Choice magazine which states 'plenty of people who suffer from osteoarthritis think it's working for them, so it's still worth giving glucosamine and chondroitin a try'.
'Consumers in Australia overwhelmingly take glucosamine together with chondroitin and numerous studies point to the efficacy and safety of using both to tackle the discomfort of conditions like osteoarthritis' said Complementary Healthcare Council Executive Director, Dr. Wendy Morrow.
'Research also indicates it is helpful in rebuilding damaged cartilage. Hence its use extends beyond mere pain relief which is a very subjective thing to measure.'
One study estimates that the indirect financial cost of osteoarthritis in 2007 was more than $7 billion (Access Economics 2007). Direct health expenditure on osteoarthritis in Australia was almost $1.2 billion in 2000–01.1
This was about 2.3% of the country's tot
